So we set off cross country on Rt. 58 West, leaving the five lane highways and stripmalls of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, stopping for lunch in Emporia then exploring the truly unpopulated part of Southern Virginia between Emporia and the foothills of Appalachia: tobacco fields and two lanes rolling over gentle hills and long stretches of forest. Suddenly Kerr Resevoir comes out of nowhere and fields are replaced by water stretching over the distance. Shortly after the faded tall buildings of Danville appear on the horizon and we stop for coffee downtown but nothing is open past 3:30 so we leave the brick buildings of forgotten railroad boom times and continue to Fairystone State Park.
The park is beautiful with views over a lake, mountains in the distance, quiet campsites in a mature forest, and the weather is cool and clear. We sleep in the truck listening to the wind in the trees.
